The Abia state government has strongly condemned the attack by fans that left two Enyimba FC players with injuries.
In a statement, the government demanded that an investigation be instituted into the heinous incident.
“We call on be authorities of NPFL to fully investigate the incident and sanction those found culpable as we will not condone any further attacks on our high flying players and fans under any guise. Failure to do the needful will compel us to consider all options, including stopping the team from playing at hostile stadiums where their lives are endangered,” read the strongly worded communique.
Enyimba defender Danladi Timothy and goalkeeper Sabirou Bassa-Djeri sustained cuts and bruises when the Plateau United supporters violently swept in. The match had ended goalless, something that inexplicably angered the Jos hooligans.
The Plateau United Supporters Club suspended two of its members after the embarrassing incident and launched an investigation of their own.
“Yahaya Sunusi (Leda)and Auwalu Shaidan have been suspended from Plateau United FC Supporters Club, and they should immediately report themselves to the police,” the statement from Plateau United stated.
The Nigeria Professional Football League has been bedevilled with violence lately, and it is hoped the authorities will act decisively after this latest embarrassment.
