The island nation of Comoros have pulled out of the 2021 COSAFA Cup at the eleventh hour. The tournament is scheduled to kick off in Gqeberha, South Africa on the 6th of July.
“Comoros was drawn in Group B alongside defending champions Zambia, Malawi, and Madagascar, with their absence now leaving three teams remaining in the pool for the regional showpiece competition,” a statement by organisers read.
In the updated fixtures program, Madagascar will take on Malawi in the opening game of the group on Wednesday at 15h00, with the Malagasy meeting Zambia in the second game on July 10 at 15h00.
The final group match will be played on July 13 between Zambia and Malawi.
Only the top-ranked nation from the three groups will go through to the semi-finals along with the best-placed runner-up. The new calculating method for that fourth spot in the semis will now be that points collected against the bottom-placed teams in Group A and C being discarded.
Covid-19 restrictions in Comoros has meant that the team cannot make it to the 20th edition of the COSAFA Cup but the hardworking team at COSAFA headquarters are making sure that the show does go on.
