Goalkeeper Veli Mothwa has accepted the heavy responsibility that comes with being named captain of the South Africa national team.

“It’s gonna be a heavy one and it is going to be a good one also because when you are captain things are a bit tough. You need to step up and lift up the players that you are playing with and carrying the nation as a captain,” the AmaZulu FC goalminder explained.

Mothwa had a blinder of a season, helping AmaZulu to finish in second place in the DStv Premiership. He will be assisted by teammate Siyethembe Sithebe and defender Rushine de Reuck in the captaincy duties.

Bafana Bafana, as South Africa is more commonly known, are in Gqeberha for the 2021 COSAFA Cup and Mothwa was taken by surprise at being named captain.

“I was not expecting it but it feels good to be the captain of Bafana Bafana,” noted the 30-year old player.

South are in group A with Eswatini, Lesotho and Botswana in the 11 team tournament that is set to kick off on the 6th of July.
