Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies FC head coach, Jerry Tshabalala has expressed satisfaction with the draw for the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League. The draw was held on Wednesday evening and it threw Sundowns into Group B with Nigeria’s Rivers Angels, ASFAR Club of Morocco, and Vihiga Queens from Kenya.
“We are very excited. We find ourselves in a very tough group. It’s an exciting group,” Tshabalala reacted after the draw which was held in Cairo.
The competition is being held in a tournament format as women’s football slows gains recognition on the African continent. Mamelodi Sundowns sailed through the COSAFA qualifiers and Tshabalala believes they are ready to fight for the first continental title available to the ladies.
“We are ready to go to Egypt and conquer Africa. If one wants to be a champion you have to play the tougher opponents,” stressed the Sundowns mentor.
Tshabalala is happy that his girls will get to play in the same group as River Angels and Vihiga Queens because he has seen both clubs playing.
“The only closed book is ASFAR Rabat from Morocco. We will need to go out there and find out how they play, how they apply themselves,” noted Tshabalala.
Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies will open their tournament with a game against Kenya champions, Vihiga Queens. The Chloorkop based club’s second encounter will be against tournament favourites Rivers Angels before finishing the group stage with a clash against the Moroccans ASFAR Rabat.
