Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos is unhappy. The Belgian believes there are those in the South African football fraternity who want to see the national team do well. Broos was hired to rebuild the Bafana Bafana team, but he has met some rather peculiar challenges, in his view.
“I’m getting the feeling that some people in this country don’t want Bafana to succeed,” Hugo Broos told a media gathering ahead of the team’s trip to Ethiopia.
Broos cited an incident where he cancelled friendly games because clubs were playing league matches during a FIFA break.
“I wanted to organise two friendly games, but suddenly there were league games in the middle of the camp. I had to cancel my friendlies,” explained the visibly irritated coach.
The Belgian mentor had similar challenges in his time with Cameroon but still went on to win the Africa Cup of Nations, so he is not one to back down from any fight. In Cameroon, he overcame player mutiny and famously omitted some big-name players from his squads. He is a famed disciplinarian, and now South Africa is finding out that he does not hide much either.
“I asked for a meeting with the PSL coaches, and it was refused. I was told it was not possible. Then there was the incident with Pirates where we were refused entry. Then yesterday Sundowns organised a vaccination for Kutumela,” ventilated Broos.
The vaccination of Thabiso Kutumela means that the in-form Mamelodi Sundowns striker cannot travel with Bafana Bafana. Midfielder Goodman Mosele did not turn up for camp and had to be replaced. It has been revealed that Mosele suffered an anxiety attack after testing positive for COVID-19.
Broos called on clubs to support the national team as this would directly benefit them.
“The value of the players increase when you have a good national team. I know this from my country. Fifteen years ago, no one wanted a Belgian player. Now everyone wants a Belgian. Interest in SA players will increase when the national team is good,” Broos stressed.
South Africa will play Ethiopia on the 9th and 12th of October in a crucial doubleheader as both teams try to qualify for Qatar’s 2022 FIFA World Cup.
