Hugo Broos is not leaving South Africa despite claims of interest from others
Hugo Broos is not leaving his job as the South Africa national team coach. The Belgian coach led Bafana Bafana to a third-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and has committed his immediate future to South Africa.
“You told me there are some people who are coming to me and saying coach this and that. If Hugo Broos is leaving South Africa it will be because the federation(SAFA) said leave,” Broos told a post-match briefing.
South Africa won a second penalty shootout out of three to win the bronze medal at the Africa Cup of Nations. The last time Bafana Bafana finished in the top three at AFCON was in 2000, so Broos’ achievement this year is no mean feat. Broos, who was the oldest coach at the tournament, is happy to stay on in Johannesburg.
“I’m happy with my job. I’m happy with the team. I’m not always happy with the media but it’s fine, I take it with,” explained Broos.
Five clean sheets in seven matches is something to build on going into the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and 2025 Africa Cup of Nations preparations. Aubrey Modiba, Teboho Mokoena, Evidence Makgopa, Ronwen Williams, and Mothibi Mvala lead various AFCON 2023 stats charts and Broos more South Africans will back the team from now on.
“I hope more people get behind the team because they deserve it,” urged the Bafana Bafana coach.
Broos and the team are scheduled to arrive in Johannesburg, South Africa on Wednesday at around 4am.
