CAF cracks down on Kasarani after entry points mayhem
CAF has imposed sanctions on Kenya’s Kasarani Stadium after security breaches marred the co-hosts’ win over Morocco. Fans forced their way into the stadium, causing overcrowding and serious risks to working staff and other supporters.
In a statement, CAF warned that Kenya risked playing their games at alternative venues if immediate action was not taken.
“CAF expects full and immediate compliance with these directives. Failure to implement them may result in more serious sanctions, which may include the consideration of alternative venues for matches of the host team,” read the statement from the mother body.
The directives issued by CAF include;
- Capacity restriction: Maximum 60% of stadium capacity(27 000 tickets)
- Ticketing: Entry strictly limited to electronic ticket holders. Thermal tickets are prohibited.
- Public accountability & compliance campaign: LOC and government to launch a public media campaign reinforcing safety protocols and entry requirements.
Fans forced their way into Kasarani, causing overcrowding inside the stadium. Working journalists were put at risk as supporters entered the media enclosure. Some people engaged in stone throwing battles with security personnel. CAF criticised the non-existent police intervention at the stadium.
The incidents have overshadowed a steady campaign by the national team.
