FIFA Case Puts Spotlight on Bafana Bafana’s World Cup Campaign

South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign has been rocked by disciplinary charges against the South African Football Association (SAFA) and midfielder Teboho Mokoena, after FIFA confirmed an investigation into his eligibility during Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 win over Lesotho in March.

Mokoena played 82 minutes in that clash despite having collected two yellow cards in earlier qualifiers against Benin and Zimbabwe — a tally that should have triggered a one-match suspension under FIFA rules. The Lesotho Football Association (LeFA) filed a formal complaint after the game, with Nigeria’s Football Federation (NFF) and other Group C rivals also scrutinising the matter.

FIFA’s letter dated September 15 charges both SAFA and Mokoena with breaching disciplinary regulations. They now have six days to respond before a ruling is made.

If found guilty, South Africa faces severe consequences. The Lesotho result would be overturned into a 3-0 defeat, stripping Bafana of three points and slashing their goal difference from +6 to +3. SAFA also risks a minimum fine of CHF 6,000 (around R132,000), while Mokoena could face a personal suspension.

The bigger blow would be to qualification hopes. South Africa currently top Group C with 14 points from eight games, but a deduction would leave them tied on 11 points with Nigeria and Rwanda, and hand Benin outright leadership on 14. Lesotho would also be lifted back into contention with 10 points. With only two fixtures left — away to Zimbabwe and home to Rwanda in October — Hugo Broos’ men would find themselves under massive pressure.

“This is a tough one because everything we’ve worked for could be undone off the pitch,” one senior Bafana source told DiskiAfrika. “But the focus now has to be on winning what’s left — no excuses.”

The case mirrors past examples, such as Ethiopia’s 2013 sanction and Nigeria’s 2017 punishment, both of which saw results overturned for fielding ineligible players. History suggests FIFA is unlikely to show leniency, even if SAFA argues it was a clerical or notification error.

For now, the group hangs in the balance. Should South Africa be docked points, the final matchdays will become a dogfight with four teams chasing two spots — one for direct qualification and another for the CAF playoff route.

Whatever FIFA decides, the ruling will not only shape Group C but could also define SAFA’s reputation for years to come.
