“We’re Not Just Here to Participate” — Khalid Aucho Confident Uganda Can Shock Africa at AFCON 2025

When the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 kicks off this December, few teams will face a tougher challenge than Uganda. Drawn in a heavyweight Group B alongside Nigeria, Tunisia, and neighbours Tanzania, the Cranes know their road to the knockout stages won’t be easy.

But for captain Khalid Aucho, this is not a group to fear — it’s an opportunity to prove that Uganda has grown into a team capable of standing toe-to-toe with Africa’s elite.

“It’s not an easy group,” Aucho admits. “These are big nations, all with ambition to lead the table. But we also know our capabilities. With the experience we have added to the squad, we can combine well and compete. It will be tough, but I believe we can advance to the next round.”

🔥 The East African Derby Edge

Few players understand the regional intensity of the Uganda–Tanzania rivalry like Aucho. Having played for Tanzanian giants Young Africans (Yanga) and now turning out for Singida Black Stars, the midfielder knows exactly what awaits when the two sides meet.

“The derby atmosphere in Tanzania is incredible — the passion, the songs, the huge crowds,” he says. “Playing in that environment prepares you mentally for pressure situations. I know what to expect, and I think that will help our boys handle the occasion better.”

The derby is set to be one of the standout fixtures of the group stages, with pride, bragging rights, and possibly qualification on the line.

🧠 Leadership, Balance, and Brotherhood

At 32, Aucho is one of Uganda’s most experienced players — a calm presence in a squad mixing seasoned campaigners with exciting young talents.

“Experience brings calmness and guidance,” he says. “The young players are humble and willing to listen, and that makes it easier for us seniors to share advice. Blending youth and experience creates balance — the energy of the young ones and the composure of the older ones. That brotherhood is what drives us forward.”

Inside the camp, Aucho reveals a lively group full of personality:

“Aziz Koyondo and Patrick Kakande are always joking, Allan Okello is the DJ, and Steven Mukwala thinks he’s DJ Mafia boss! Those vibes keep us united.”

🎯 Aiming Beyond the Round of 16

Uganda’s last major AFCON moment came in 2019, when they reached the Round of 16. But Aucho insists that simply repeating that feat would not be enough.

“For us, reaching the round of 16 again is not enough,” he says. “Our ambition now is to go further — to the quarter-finals, and who knows, maybe even the semis or the final. Step by step, but always aiming higher.”

Aucho has represented clubs across Africa, Europe, and Asia — from Uganda and Kenya to South Africa, Serbia, Egypt, India, and Tanzania — and that global experience, he believes, can help the Cranes manage the big moments better this time around.

💪 Veterans, Vision, and a Nation Behind Them

Uganda’s qualification campaign was defined by discipline, team spirit, and a new tactical maturity. The Cranes are not the flashiest team in Africa, but under pressure, they are organised, physical, and increasingly confident in possession.

“I know this could be one of my last AFCONs,” Aucho reflects. “So I want to give everything for my country. The fans have always supported us, and we want to make them proud — whether they’re in Morocco or back home.”

Asked what success would look like for Uganda, Aucho doesn’t hesitate:

“Success would be progressing further than before, reaching at least the quarter-finals. But equally, it’s about showing character, discipline, and togetherness. If we leave Morocco having earned respect and belief, then we will have done something important for Ugandan football.”

🦅 Diskiafrika Verdict

Uganda may not be among the favourites, but their mix of experience, discipline, and fearless energy could make them one of the dark horses of AFCON 2025. With Khalid Aucho leading from the front, the Cranes have every reason to dream — and every intention to fight.
