Motsepe in Senegal with AFCON Cloud Still Hanging Over CAF

The President of Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, is set for a high-stakes visit to Dakar on Wednesday, as tensions continue to ripple across African football following the controversial AFCON 2025 final.

CAF confirmed that Motsepe will meet with Bassirou Diomaye Faye as well as Abdoulaye Fall of the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football. While details of the discussions remain under wraps, the timing of the visit suggests it is closely linked to the fallout from the explosive Africa Cup of Nations 2025 Final.

That final, played in Rabat, saw Senegal national football team initially defeat Morocco national football team 1–0 after extra time, thanks to a late strike from Pape Gueye. However, the match descended into chaos following a controversial refereeing decision by Jean-Jacques Ndala, which sparked a dramatic walk-off by Senegal’s players under the instruction of head coach Pape Thiaw.

The situation was only salvaged after intervention from captain Sadio Mané, who convinced his teammates to return to the pitch. Morocco were awarded a late penalty, but Brahim Díaz failed to convert, forcing the game into extra time where Senegal eventually secured victory.

But the drama didn’t end there.

Following protests from the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, CAF’s Appeal Board later overturned the result, awarding Morocco a 3–0 victory and stripping Senegal of the title—one of the most unprecedented decisions in the tournament’s history.

The ruling has since triggered further legal action, with Senegal taking the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, where a final verdict could take months unless expedited.

Motsepe’s visit to Dakar is therefore seen as a critical diplomatic and footballing mission, aimed at stabilising relations and addressing the growing uncertainty surrounding African football governance. With the continent still divided over the handling of the final, all eyes will be on what emerges from these high-level discussions.
