Omar Artan’s World Cup Dream Shattered On Entry

Somalian referee Omar Artan’s dream of officiating at the FIFA World Cup has come to an unexpected end after he was denied entry into the United States ahead of the tournament.

Artan, who was selected as the only referee from Somalia for the FIFA World Cup, arrived at Miami International Airport from Istanbul on Saturday but was refused admission by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Although U.S. authorities did not initially identify the individual involved, Artan was later confirmed as the referee affected by the decision.

In a statement released by FIFA, Artan expressed disappointment but remained optimistic about his future in football officiating.

“Despite the circumstances, I am in a positive mood and focused on the next challenges in my refereeing career,” Artan said.

“I would like to thank FIFA and CAF for all their support. I promise to continue working hard and maintaining high refereeing standards as I focus on future opportunities. I also wish my colleagues every success during the World Cup.”

FIFA confirmed that Artan would not be able to participate in the tournament, explaining that immigration matters fall under the authority of the host nation.

“Like previous FIFA competitions, the host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and who is granted entry into the country,” FIFA stated.

The world football governing body added that it had been informed by U.S. authorities that Artan’s immigration status would not be changed in time for the tournament.
