Defending Champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape to Launch Betway SA20 Season 5 Against Pretoria Capitals
The countdown to another summer of explosive T20 cricket has officially begun after the Betway SA20 unveiled its fixtures for the 2027 season, with defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape set to open the tournament against Pretoria Capitals in a repeat of last season’s thrilling final.
The fifth edition of South Africa’s premier T20 competition gets underway on 17 January 2027 at St George’s Park in Gqeberha, where Sunrisers Eastern Cape will begin the defence of their title against the Capitals in what promises to be an explosive curtain-raiser.
The tournament will conclude just over a month later with the Final at Newlands in Cape Town on 21 February, as the country’s six franchises once again battle for domestic T20 supremacy.
Season Begins with a Championship Rematch
There could hardly be a better way to launch Season 5 than with a rematch of the 2026 final, one of the most memorable title deciders in the competition’s history.
Betway SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith believes the opening fixture perfectly captures the excitement surrounding the tournament.
“Announcing the fixtures is always a significant milestone because it signals the beginning of our preparations for another incredible season of cricket,” Smith said.
“There is no better way to start Season 5 than with a repeat of one of the most thrilling finals we’ve ever had. Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Pretoria Capitals produced a classic last season, and it’s fitting that they open the new campaign in Gqeberha.”
Saturdays Packed with Cricket Action
Fans can also look forward to four blockbuster Saturday double-headers throughout the competition.
The first takes place on 23 January, with Durban’s Super Giants hosting Pretoria Capitals at Kingsmead before Joburg Super Kings welcome Sunrisers Eastern Cape to the Wanderers later that evening.
Further double-header weekends are scheduled for 30 January, 6 February, and 13 February, ensuring supporters across South Africa enjoy a packed calendar of world-class T20 entertainment.
Play-Off Picture Confirmed
Cape Town will once again host the tournament’s showpiece event, with Newlands staging the Final for the second consecutive year and the third time since the league was launched.
There is also a historic first for Boland Park, which will host Qualifier 1 on 16 February, marking the venue’s maiden Betway SA20 play-off fixture.
Johannesburg’s iconic Wanderers Stadium will become the centre of attention during the final week of the tournament.
The Eliminator is scheduled for 17 February, while Qualifier 2 will take place on 19 February, with the winner securing the second place in the Final.

Cape Town Ready for Another Showpiece
Cape Town Executive Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis welcomed the return of the final to Newlands, highlighting the city’s growing reputation as one of the world’s leading cricket destinations.
“The Betway SA20 has become one of the highlights of Cape Town’s sporting calendar,” said Hill-Lewis.
“Hosting the Final again in a year when we will also welcome the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup further reinforces Cape Town’s status as one of the world’s great cricket cities. We look forward to welcoming players and fans from across South Africa and beyond.”
