Betway Premiership Turns 30 as New Season Promises More Drama On and Off the Pitch
South African football is entering a landmark season as the Premier Soccer League (PSL) celebrates 30 years of professional football with the launch of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign.
The new season was officially unveiled by the PSL and title sponsors Betway, bringing together league executives, coaches from all 16 top-flight clubs and key football stakeholders for a celebration of three decades of professional football in South Africa.
But while the anniversary provided an opportunity to look back, attention is now firmly shifting towards what promises to be another fiercely contested season.
Three Decades of PSL Football
Since its establishment, the PSL has grown into one of Africa’s leading professional football competitions.
The league has been a launching pad for some of South Africa’s biggest football stars, while clubs and coaches have produced countless memorable moments for supporters across the country.
The 2026/27 campaign will add another chapter to that history, with the league entering its 31st season while celebrating the 30-year milestone of professional football under the PSL structure.
For Betway, meanwhile, the new campaign represents its third season as title sponsor of the country’s top division.
Betway Increases the Stakes for Fans
The partnership between Betway and the PSL has also placed an increasing emphasis on fan engagement.
One of the most visible initiatives has been the S’bonise & Win campaign, which rewards supporters who turn up to televised Betway Premiership matches wearing their club colours.
The initiative has already handed cash prizes to hundreds of fans while helping create a more vibrant atmosphere inside stadiums.
For the 2026/27 season, supporters have another reason to get involved.
Betway has increased the potential prize for eligible supporters to R30,000 as part of the PSL’s 30th anniversary celebrations.
Betway Head of Sponsorship Jason Shield said the increased reward was designed to recognise the supporters who have helped build the league’s identity over three decades.
“Football belongs to the fans, so we want to recognise this occasion by increasing the S’bonise & Win prize to R30,000,” Shield said.
“It’s our way of celebrating the League’s rich history while rewarding the supporters whose passion and loyalty have helped shape it over the past 30 years.”
How S’bonise & Win Works This Season
The basic structure of the promotion remains unchanged.
Winners will continue to receive R10,000, but supporters with active Betway accounts will now see their prize boosted to R30,000.
That represents a significant increase from last season, when winners received R10,000 and eligible Betway account holders could double their prize to R20,000.
The initiative is expected to add another layer of excitement to matchdays as clubs prepare for the start of the new campaign.
Another Chapter Begins
With the 2026/27 season getting underway this weekend, the focus will quickly shift from anniversary celebrations to the familiar business of winning football matches.
Championship ambitions, relegation battles, local rivalries and the emergence of the next generation of South African stars will once again dominate the conversation.
As the PSL celebrates 30 years of professional football, the new Betway Premiership season offers an opportunity to reflect on how far the competition has comeāand to begin writing the next chapter of South African football history.
