Kaizer Chiefs Suffer Double Injury Blow Ahead of Golden Arrows Clash

Kaizer Chiefs will head into Sunday’s Betway Premiership clash against Golden Arrows without captain Brandon Petersen and attacker Wandile Duba after both players were ruled out through injury.

The injuries leave coach Fernando da Cruz facing two enforced changes as Amakhosi prepare for their trip to Mbombela Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm.

Petersen is expected to be sidelined for between four and six weeks after suffering a knee injury during training on Tuesday, while Duba faces a shorter spell on the sidelines with a hip and groin problem.

Renaldo Leaner set for Chiefs debut?

Petersen’s absence could give new signing Renaldo Leaner an opportunity to take over the goalkeeper’s gloves.

The Chiefs captain had started and completed all seven matches for the club this season, making his injury a significant setback for Da Cruz.

However, the goalkeeper’s form had come under scrutiny following costly mistakes in recent matches against Golden Arrows, Mamelodi Sundowns, Richards Bay and Polokwane City.

Those errors contributed to Chiefs dropping points and had fuelled calls from supporters for Leaner to be given an opportunity.

The injury has now forced Da Cruz’s hand, with Leaner potentially in line for his first start as Chiefs’ new No.1.

The immediate challenge will be to help maintain Amakhosi’s unbeaten start to the league campaign before the FIFA international break.

Duba absence creates opportunity for Abrahams

Duba’s injury is another blow for Chiefs, although the forward is expected to return in around two weeks.

The attacker has been one of Amakhosi’s most productive players this season, scoring three goals in five league appearances.

His absence could open the door for Faiz Abrahams, who impressed after coming off the bench against Siwelele.

The Cape Town-born forward played an influential role in the closing stages of that match, with his pressure contributing to Samukelo Xulu’s own goal.

Abrahams is on loan from Stellenbosch and will see Sunday’s match as an opportunity to push for a regular starting position.

A strong run of performances could also strengthen his case for Chiefs to consider making his move permanent.
