Kenya’s fairy-tale CHAN debut came to an agonising end on Friday night as Madagascar edged the Harambee Stars 4-3 on penalties at a pulsating Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. But head coach Benni McCarthy insists the journey proves Kenyan football is moving firmly in the right direction.

The hosts, dreaming of a first continental semi-final in 38 years, looked set for glory when Alphonce Omija’s header sent the stadium into raptures. But Fenohasina Razafimaro equalised from the spot before Madagascar held their nerve in the shoot-out, Omija turning from hero to heartbroken as his miss proved decisive.

“Nothing but proud of what we achieved,” McCarthy said afterwards. “The players gave everything, every single day. It’s painful because penalties are the lottery of football, but this team has shown Kenya belongs on this stage.”

The South African tactician praised Madagascar’s composure but admitted his side’s wastefulness in front of goal was costly. “It could have been anyone’s game. We’re disappointed we couldn’t take the chances we had. At this level, you get punished.”

Despite the exit, Kenya can take immense pride from topping a group that included Morocco, Zambia, and DR Congo, while conceding just twice in five matches. McCarthy believes that foundation is a launchpad for greater things.

“The fans have been incredible. The talent we saw in this tournament has been immense. Kenyan football is on the up,” he said. “Today was just one hurdle too many, but tomorrow we’ll look back with pride at what we achieved.”

Kenya’s CHAN dream may have ended, but under McCarthy, the Harambee Stars have sent a clear message: the future is bright.
