Guinea stun Algeria as Sudan shock Mauritania in World Cup qualifiers

Guinea put their World Cup qualifiers train back on track with a stunning away win while Sudan produced the shock of the round so far in Wednesday’s interesting football games. With nine automatic spots up for grabs, more twists and turns can be expected on the road to the Americas in 2026.

Mortaye Sylla and Aguibou Camara struck for Guinea at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers in a convincing win for Guinea over Algeria. The 2-1 win puts Guinea level on points with Algeria, who many pundits expected to dominate Group G.

Sudan find themselves topping a Group B that includes Senegal and DR Congo! Saifeldin Malik struck early on the way to a 2-0 victory over the struggling Mauritania. The Sudanese cause was helped by a 1-1 draw between former Africa Cup of Nations winners, Senegal and DR Congo. After an excellent showing at AFCON, Mauritania sit at the bottom of the standings with two losses in three games.

Jordan Ayew scored injury time as Ghana snatched victory out of the proverbial jaws of defeat in 2-1 win over Mali. Ernest Nuamah had earlier cancelled out Kamory Doumbia’s opener for Mali. The Black Stars are now level on points with group leaders Comoros who play Madagascar on Thursday afternoon. Group I is turning out to be open and exciting. Mali are still in it, sitting on four points after three games.

A Trezeguit brace saw Egypt collect the full haul of points against Burkina Faso in Group A. With Guinea-Bissau only managing a draw against Ethiopia, the Pharaohs now have a four-point lead at the top.

Douko Dodo ensured Benin took a temporary lead of Group C with a 1-0 win over Rwanda. Nigeria host South Africa while Zimbabwe meet Lesotho on Thursday, so a standings change is imminent.

In other results, Malawi breezed past Sao Tome & Principe with a 3-1 victory in Group H. Libya beat Mauritius 2-1 to go top of Group D. The Group E match between Congo Brazzaville and Niger was postponed.

The road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup continues in earnest for African nations, hoping to send 10 countries for the first time.
