It was history in the making at Shimla Park, Bloemfontein, on Thursday night as the University of the Free State (UFS) lifted their first-ever Varsity Football title, edging TUT 5-4 on penalties after a tense goalless draw.
The final – played at a blistering tempo from the first whistle – had fans on their feet throughout, with both sides creating chances but failing to break the deadlock. The first clear opening fell to UFS striker Jerome Jansen, whose shot skimmed just wide.
The game’s rhythm shifted dramatically in the 25th minute when two inspirational captains, Iviwe Dyabuza (UFS) and Lucky Raphala (TUT), clashed heavily in midfield. Both had to be stretchered off, robbing the match of its two talismanic leaders.
Despite UFS dominating the second half with wave after wave of attack, the Red Army stood firm, dragging the final into penalties for the third consecutive year.
The decisive moment came when TUT’s Lehlomo Tolo fired his penalty over the bar. UFS kept their nerve, and it was substitute Theko Phinithi, who had come on for the injured Dyabuza, that calmly converted the winner to spark wild celebrations in Bloemfontein.
“This is what dreams are made of,” said UFS coach [insert coach’s name if available, or leave general], praising his side’s resilience. “We’ve worked for years to get here, and to finally bring the trophy home means everything to the players, the staff, and the university.”
For TUT, it was heartbreak once again. “Penalties are always cruel,” their coach admitted, “but I’m proud of how the boys fought. We will be back stronger.”
