After lifting the T20 Challenge title and sharing the 4 Day Series trophy last season, the DP World Lions are back in action this week, opening their 2025/26 campaign with an away clash against WSB Western Province in Cape Town.

The Lions sat out the opening round but return on Thursday eager to build early momentum, despite several changes to their squad.

Proteas Call-Ups Bring Fresh Opportunities

Captain Dominic Hendricks admits that the team will look slightly different this season as key players move up to the national setup.

“There have been some changes in our squad because a few of our players that were with us last season have moved up into the Proteas set-up,” Hendricks explained.

“Zubayr Hamza and Bjorn Fortuin, who were crucial for us last season, are away with the Proteas, so we’ll be giving opportunities to other squad players. Week on week there may be changes, but the core group is still intact and excited to get going.”

The Lions’ dominance in the longer format last season – finishing top of the log and producing more wins (3) than any other side – gives them confidence heading into another challenging campaign.

Hunting the 4 Day Title Outright

Hendricks made it clear that winning the 4 Day Series outright is at the top of their priority list.

“This is the toughest competition to win because you have to play consistent cricket over such a long stretch,” he said. “Last season we had to share the trophy after losing a day to weather in the final, so this time we’re determined to lift it outright.”

The skipper highlighted the team’s diversity as a strength, noting that while the batting unit has remained stable, the bowling attack has been bolstered.

Balance in the Squad

The Lions will lean on their experienced batting core, while new additions and emerging talent aim to fill the gaps.

  • Beyers Swanepoel, an all-rounder, adds depth with both bat and ball.
  • Cody Yusuf, consistent in recent seasons, remains a key weapon with the ball.

“Our batting has been consistent over the years, and from a bowling perspective we’re well covered,” Hendricks noted.

Building for the Proteas and Beyond

While silverware is always the target, Hendricks emphasised that another measure of success is preparing players for higher honours.

The Lions’ pride lies in the fact that their performances regularly feed into the Proteas setup – and this season provides fresh chances for others to step up and follow the same path.
