Madagascar booked their spot in the CHAN PAMOJA 2024 semi-finals after edging Kenya 4-3 on penalties in a nerve-shredding quarter-final at a packed Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Friday night.
The Harambee Stars, playing in front of a roaring home crowd, were chasing a first continental semi-final in 38 years. But their dream debut ended in heartbreak as Alphonce Omija missed from the spot and Toky Rakotondraibe converted the decisive kick to send the Barea through.
“It was very difficult, the penalties almost broke my heart,” admitted Madagascar coach Romuald Rakotondrabe. “But the players showed character and mental strength. We had to be ready tactically and mentally because Kenya were dangerous in front of their fans.”
After a tense 1-1 draw over 120 minutes — with Fenohasina Razafimaro’s penalty cancelling out Kenya’s opener — the Malagasy side held their nerve when it mattered most. Goalkeeper Michel Ramandimbisoa turned hero, pulling off two vital saves in the shootout.
“We are very proud to have him with us,” Rakotondrabe said of his keeper. “He has really helped us in every match, and I hope he goes into the next game with the same spirit.”
The result silenced the Kasarani faithful and underlined Madagascar’s growing pedigree on the continent. Having clinched bronze at CHAN 2022, the Barea are now just one match away from a historic first final.
“The players have shown they can handle pressure, they can adapt and fight,” Rakotondrabe added. “Now we must continue with the same mentality in the semi-final.”
Madagascar’s fairytale run continues, built on tactical discipline, resilience, and a goalkeeper in inspired form.
