Mamelodi Sundowns Ready to Take the Chance to go Top

Mamelodi Sundowns have a chance to climb to the top of the Betway Premiership table when they host Marumo Gallants on Tuesday night at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

Sundowns head into the clash in excellent form following their 3–0 victory over Stade Malien in the first leg of their CAF Champions League quarter-final last Friday. Results elsewhere also played in their favour, with current league leaders Orlando Pirates held to a 1–1 draw by Siwelele FC, leaving Sundowns just one point behind with a game in hand.

A victory in Pretoria would see coach Miguel Cardoso’s side move two points clear at the top, strengthening their push for a ninth consecutive league title.

Momentum Turns for Sundowns

Just over a month ago, Sundowns faced pressure both domestically and in Africa. Their Champions League campaign was in danger after collecting only one point from two matches against Al-Hilal Omdurman, while their league title race with Pirates was tightening.

However, a 2–0 win over MC Alger revived their continental ambitions, followed by a crucial 2–1 league victory over Orlando Pirates, helping Masandawana regain momentum.

Since then, the title race has swung between the two heavyweights, with goal difference often separating them at the summit.

Gallants Fighting at the Bottom

While Sundowns chase silverware, Gallants arrive in Pretoria battling at the opposite end of the table.

The club recently appointed Matome Trevor Mathiane and Julian Outrebon as interim co-coaches following the suspension of former head coach Alexandre Lafitte after a difficult run of results.

Gallants currently sit 14th in the 16-team league, hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone. Only goal difference separates them from 15th-placed Orbit College FC, meaning every point is crucial as they attempt to avoid the drop.

With title ambitions on one side and relegation fears on the other, Tuesday’s encounter in Pretoria carries major significance for both teams
