Real, Factual.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has parted ways with national team coach Michael Nees, bringing an abrupt end to a turbulent 13-month tenure marked by poor results and growing frustration within local football circles.

Nees, who was appointed in September 2024, departs after managing just two wins in 16 matches, both against Namibia during last year’s AFCON qualifiers. Under his guidance, the Warriors endured a dismal FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, finishing bottom of Group C with five defeats and five draws — and no victories to show for their effort.

In a statement released on Wednesday, ZIFA confirmed the decision:

“The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) wishes to inform all stakeholders and members of the public that the Executive Committee has resolved to terminate the contract of Mr. Michael Nees with immediate effect.”

The federation thanked the German coach for his service but offered little detail on his successor.

“ZIFA takes this opportunity to sincerely thank Mr. Nees for his efforts and contributions to Zimbabwean football during his tenure. His dedication to the game and his service to the national structures are appreciated.”

Nees’ dismissal follows months of mounting pressure after a string of uninspired performances and concerns over his tactical approach. His tenure coincided with ZIFA’s broader attempt at rebuilding credibility following years of administrative instability and FIFA-imposed suspension.

While the search for a new head coach is underway, ZIFA confirmed that interim technical arrangements will be announced soon as the team prepares for its upcoming AFCON qualifiers. Former Supersport United defender, Kaitano Tembo, is a short-term possibility.

“ZIFA remains firmly committed to strengthening its technical development programs and ensuring continued progress in all areas of the game in line with its reform and restructuring agenda,” the statement added.

The latest decision underscores ZIFA’s urgent need to stabilise the national setup — and reignite belief in a Warriors side that has struggled for consistency on and off the pitch.
