It has now been officially revealed that there has been no formal approach for Mamelodi Sundowns coach, Manqoba Mngqithi from Kaizer Chiefs. The KZN-born Mngqithi has been subject to a lot of social media speculation with Chiefs in the search for a new coach.
“We have not had a formal approach from Kaizer Chiefs for Manqoba,” Mngqithi’s agent Mike Makaab said on Gagasi FM.
Makaab is a well-known football agent in South Africa and is not known for dishing out fake news, especially when speaking on the sports show he co-hosts. Makaab says the speculation has been driven by Kaizer Chiefs fans who are desperate for a coach to lead the team out of a trophy drought that now spans over a decade.
“I don’t think we should be making a formal move unless there was genuine interest from the club(Chiefs) itself, not through the media. That’s what the media tells me, that Kaizer Chiefs fans would love him there but there’s been a lot of speculation about who is going to be the next coach,” explained on the Extra Time on Gagasi FM radio show.
Manqoba Mngqithi and Makaab are in talks with Sundowns over a contract extension.
“I think out of respect for the football club, for Chiefs itself. Out of respect for Mamelodi Sundowns, I think we should just let the story unfold the way it’s going to unfold,” Makaab concluded.
Makaab said the name Manqoba Mngqithi has been thrown around for far too long regarding the Amakhosi search for a head coach.
