Uganda Withdraws U23 Squad From AFCON
The Federation of Uganda Football Associations, FUFA, has withdrawn Uganda’s U23 squad from the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Citing financial constraints, the FUFA president said the decision was a painful one to make.
“FUFA Executive Committee took a painful decision to withdraw the U-23 team from the AFCON qualifiers where we were supposed to play Guinea due to financial constraints,” announced Magogo Moses Hassim, the FUFA president at the FUFA Annual General Assembly.
The news comes as Milutin Sredojevic had called up a squad to play Guinea in the second round of qualifiers for the U23 Africa Cup of Nations. Sredojevic expressed his disappointment via his personal Twitter account.
“In 8 years or over 3000 I have served wholeheartedly Ugandan football today is the saddest day that shattered dreams of playing at Olympic games. We swallowed bitter 💊 pill and we move on as it was beyond us ……,” read the tweet from the Serbian, who also serves as the senior men’s team coach.
Guinea will now get a bye and take the next step in their dream of playing in the 2024 Olympic Games, as the AFCON tournament also serves as the qualifiers.
