Mofokeng brace helps Bafana cruise past Eritrea

Bafana Bafana made it two wins from two in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after beating Eritrea 5-0 in Cairo on Wednesday night.

Relebohile Mofokeng was at the centre of the result, scoring twice as South Africa took control of the match at Al-Salam Stadium.

Eritrea started brightly and put Bafana under pressure in the opening stages, but South Africa gradually settled and began to create chances.

Mofokeng opened the scoring in the 19th minute before finding the net again in first-half stoppage time to give Bafana a 2-0 lead at the break.

South Africa continued to dictate the game after the restart, with Sphephelo Sithole adding a third in the 52nd minute.

Iqraam Rayners extended the advantage in the 62nd minute before substitute Luther Singh completed the scoring in second-half stoppage time.

Ronwen Williams also made an important contribution, producing several saves to keep Eritrea from getting on the scoresheet and helping Bafana secure the clean sheet.

The victory gives South Africa six points from their opening two AFCON qualifiers and strengthens their start to the campaign.

Bafana did, however, suffer another injury setback when Bathusi Aubaas was forced off in the 16th minute. Brooklyn Poggenpoel came on in his place, while Teboho Mokoena and Aubrey Modiba had already been ruled out before the match.

Bafana will remain in Cairo ahead of their next assignment, an international friendly against Egypt at the Cairo International Stadium on Sunday, 4 October.image0.jpeg
