Zimbabwe coach Michael Nees has defended his decision to stick with some of the Warriors’ most experienced players, dismissing suggestions that the national team should phase out its ageing stars.

The debate over whether the likes of Khama Billiat, Washington Arubi, Knowledge Musona, and Marvelous Nakamba should still be central to the squad has grown louder in recent months, especially with a new generation of exciting youngsters emerging. But Nees has made it clear that the Warriors’ recent success — including qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) — would not have been possible without the return of his senior players.

“Khama Billiat was not ready to play, Washington Arubi had not been brought back, and without these two players most likely we wouldn’t have qualified,” Nees said. “The other players did not perform to their level.”

When the German coach took over, Zimbabwe were in a slump, having suffered back-to-back World Cup qualifying defeats to Lesotho (2-0) and South Africa (3-1). The mood around the camp was low, and belief was fading. But the reintroduction of Billiat and Arubi brought stability and inspiration.

With the veterans leading from the front, Zimbabwe managed to steady the ship. They picked up draws against Kenya, Cameroon, Benin, and Nigeria, while recording crucial back-to-back wins against Namibia. That run was enough to restore confidence and secure AFCON 2025 qualification, proving that experience still counts at the highest level.

While critics argue the team must transition fully to youth, Nees believes balance is the key. Youngsters like Tawanda Chirewa and Tawanda Maswanhise have injected energy and flair, while the veterans have provided composure and leadership in decisive moments.

“Even if the older players don’t play every minute, their influence is undeniable. Leadership and calm under pressure cannot be replaced overnight,” Nees emphasized.

As the Warriors now turn their focus to the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Nees insists that both the “old guard” and the new generation will be vital. For Zimbabwe to compete with Africa’s best, the coach believes it cannot be an either-or debate. Success depends on blending youthful firepower with the wisdom of experience
