Benjani Relishing Scottland Test as Highlanders Look to End League Leaders’ Winning Run
Highlanders head coach Benjani Mwaruwari is confident his side can rise to the occasion when they host Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League leaders Scottland FC on Sunday in one of the weekend’s most anticipated fixtures.
Bosso face arguably their toughest assignment of the season against a Scottland side that has emerged as the team to beat after an outstanding run of results. The league leaders head into the clash on the back of an impressive winning streak and have built a reputation for their defensive solidity, making them one of the most difficult teams to break down.
Despite acknowledging the quality of the opposition, Benjani believes Highlanders are capable of producing a performance that can trouble the table-toppers.
“We all know that Scottland are a very good team,” said Benjani.
“They have quality all over the pitch and they’ve been playing very well. I think they’ve won nine or 10 matches in a row without conceding, so we know the challenge that awaits us.”
The former Zimbabwe international admitted Highlanders have shown encouraging signs in recent weeks, even if their performances have not always translated into maximum points.
Bosso have displayed flashes of the football Benjani wants his team to play, but inconsistency in front of goal has prevented them from climbing further up the table.
“We have been playing well but not picking up as many points as we wanted,” he added.
“But hopefully, according to what we’re doing here, the preparation has gone well and we’ll do better on Sunday.”
Benjani also called on the Highlanders supporters to create the intimidating atmosphere for which Bosso fans are renowned, believing their backing could make a crucial difference against the league leaders.
“Our fans always support us. The message to them is that they have to come in numbers and support us, and they always do.”
With Scottland aiming to extend their remarkable unbeaten run and Highlanders eager to make a statement against the league leaders, Sunday’s encounter promises to be one of the standout fixtures in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League.
