Free State Stadium Gets the Nod for Bafana’s Showndown with Nigeria
After weeks of doubt, Bloemfontein’s Free State Stadium has officially been cleared to host Bafana Bafana’s blockbuster 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Nigeria on Tuesday, 9 September 2025. Kick-off is set for 18h00.
The match had been hanging in the balance due to concerns over the pitch’s readiness following a punishing winter. But following a recent inspection, both FIFA and CAF signed off on the venue, noting “encouraging progress” in the surface’s condition.
The confirmation is a relief for SAFA and local supporters eager to see top-level international football return to a stadium steeped in South African football history.
Bafana coach Hugo Broos welcomed the decision, shifting the spotlight firmly back onto preparations.
“Now that the venue is confirmed, the focus is only on football. It’s a huge game, and we know Bloemfontein fans will give us the energy we need,” Broos said.
Before Nigeria, though, Bafana must first negotiate a tricky away fixture against Lesotho on Friday, 5 September — a potential banana peel that could derail momentum ahead of the Super Eagles clash.
For the Free State, this is more than just a football match. It’s another chance to relive the roar of 2010, and to stand behind Bafana in their pursuit of a place at the World Cup.
