Broos Demands Blood and Sweat as Bafana Brace for Lesotho and Nigeria

No excuses, no shortcuts. That’s the message from Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos as South Africa prepare for a make-or-break week in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Bafana travel to Lesotho on Friday, 5 September, before hosting continental giants Nigeria on Tuesday, 9 September — two games that could shape the team’s road to North America.

“Fight for every metre”

Broos, never one to sugar-coat, has challenged his men to go to war in Bloemfontein.

“We have to reach our best level, and we have to fight. Every second, every square metre of the pitch, we must give everything,” he insisted. “It would be a very good situation for us if we could win against Lesotho. That’s where the momentum starts.”

The Belgian admits this has been one of the toughest camps of his tenure, with injuries ripping through his squad. Key men are already sidelined, and the latest setbacks to Ime Okon and Patrick Maswanganyi forced Broos to summon Sipho Mbule and Thabo Moloisane as late replacements.

Injuries bite, youngsters rise

The absence of several regulars has opened the door for hungry youngsters. Rising stars Kamogelo Sebelele and Mduduzi Shabalala, who sat alongside Broos at the team’s arrival presser, spoke about grabbing the opportunity.

“This call-up shows our hard work at club level is being noticed. We’re ready to contribute,” said Shabalala.

A defining week

For Broos and Bafana, the message is clear: qualifying campaigns are not won on flair alone. Against Lesotho, they must prove their grit; against Nigeria, they must show their class.

Two games. Six points on the line. One nation watching.
