Kessie: We Are Ready To Defend Our Title
Côte d’Ivoire captain Franck Yannick Kessié says the reigning African champions are fully prepared to handle the weight of expectation as they open their TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 campaign against Mozambique.
Speaking on the eve of the Elephants’ first match, Kessié acknowledged that defending the continental crown brings added pressure, but insists the squad has embraced that responsibility from the start of their preparations.
“As champions, we are a team everyone wants to beat. That naturally brings pressure, but we understood that early and worked to be ready for it,” the midfielder said.
Kessié revealed that Côte d’Ivoire’s build-up to the tournament has been all-encompassing, with equal emphasis placed on physical condition, tactical readiness and mental strength — key ingredients for success at AFCON level.
“We worked on everything — technically, physically and mentally. In a tournament like this, mental management and team unity are just as important as what happens on the pitch.”
Looking ahead to their opener, the skipper expressed confidence in the squad’s readiness, describing the mood in camp as focused and positive.
“The preparation has gone very well. We have worked seriously and we feel ready. Now we are eager to get started.”
Despite backing his own side, Kessié was quick to show respect for Mozambique, warning that complacency could be costly.
“They are an ambitious team that plays without fear. We respect them, but we also know what we want to do. The key is to take our chances and remain disciplined.”
The former AC Milan midfielder closed with a message for Ivorian supporters, promising commitment and determination from the very first whistle.
“Our fans expect a lot, and rightly so. What we can promise is that this group is ready, focused and determined to defend the title. We will give everything from the first match.”
