Namibia looking to discover 2020 form at COSAFA Championships
Namibia will be hoping to rediscover the form that once carried them to the COSAFA Under-20 Championship final when the 2026 TotalEnergies CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations COSAFA Qualifier takes place in Mauritius from September 18 to 27.
The Young Brave Warriors have twice finished runners-up in the regional competition, but their most recent campaigns have been characterised by early exits.
Namibia came agonisingly close to lifting the title in 2020, reaching the final after an impressive run that included victories over Malawi and Comoros in the group stage before a 1-0 semi-final win against Angola.
Their challenge ultimately ended in heartbreak as Mozambique edged them 1-0 in the final.
That performance nevertheless secured Namibia a place at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Under-20 tournament. Their continental campaign proved considerably tougher, with Namibia collecting just one point from three group matches after drawing 1-1 with the Central African Republic and losing to Tunisia and Burkina Faso.
Since then, Namibia have struggled to reproduce their 2020 momentum.
Their 2022 COSAFA campaign ended in the group stage after defeats to Comoros, South Africa and Malawi. Two years later, they suffered narrow losses against Angola and Zambia in another early exit.
Playing on home soil in 2025 offered an opportunity to change their fortunes, but Namibia again failed to progress beyond the group phase, winning just one of their three matches.
The challenge in 2026 will be significant.
Namibia have been drawn in Group A alongside hosts Mauritius, Mozambique and Seychelles, with only the group winner guaranteed a place in the semi-finals. The best runner-up across the three groups will also advance to the last four.
The Young Brave Warriors can, however, draw confidence from their history in the competition.
Namibia first emerged as a serious regional force in the 2007 tournament when they reached the semi-finals. Their breakthrough came three years later when they surprised several of the established sides to reach the 2010 final, where they lost to Zambia.
The 2020 campaign remains their most recent run to the final and matched their best-ever finish.
Their overall record since the tournament’s early years shows a team that has spent much of its history battling to progress beyond the opening stages.

Namibia missed the 2016, 2018 and 2019 editions, while their 2017 campaign ended in the group stage despite an opening 1-0 victory over Angola.
The task now is to turn past promise into another deep run.
With two final appearances already on their record, Namibia know they have the ability to compete for honours in the region. The immediate objective will be to navigate a tricky Group A and secure a place in the semi-finals.
If the Young Brave Warriors can rediscover the resilience and organisation that took them to the 2020 final, they could once again emerge as one of the surprise packages of the COSAFA Under-20 Championship.
