AmaZulu nevertheless found the breakthrough from the spot and then protected their slender advantage.

Kruger came close to forcing a late equaliser when substitute Lesedi Kapinga tried his luck from distance in injury time. Mzimela produced the save that kept Usuthu ahead.

Ekstein supplied the winning goal, but the goalkeeper’s intervention ensured it remained decisive.

AmaZulu join the quarter-final field after surviving a competitive encounter, while Kruger exit despite pushing their opponents to the closing stages.
