Reigning champions Gor Mahia open their SportPesa League title defence on Saturday against Murang’a Seal at Nyayo Stadium (4pm) — and coach Charles Akonnor has already made clear he wants a response after a brutal continental exit.

Gor’s CAF Champions League campaign ended in painful fashion — a 2-0 first-leg loss at home followed by a 5-1 hammering in Cairo, going down 7-1 on aggregate to Egyptian side Pyramids FC. Akonnor didn’t hold back afterwards, pointing to basic individual errors his players simply have to cut out. His message going forward is blunt: eliminate the mistakes, tighten the midfield, and move on.
Akonnor’s plan for Saturday
Expect Gor to stick with their 4-2-3-1 setup, with Alpha Onyango and Ebenezer Ocran screening the back four and Jackson Dwang linking play behind David Okoth. Murang’a Seal haven’t played a competitive match in almost four months after their opening fixtures were postponed — but they ended last season on a good run, including wins over Bidco United, Mara Sugar, and Kakamega Homeboyz.
