The green armband highlights the #SpeakUp campaign and is given to a heroic player after every game of the ongoing Varsity Football tournament.

“Honestly it’s amazing. It feels great to be part of the players selected to wear it(green armband) and actually show awareness, and allow people to know more about the campaign,” said Banga after his side clinched a semi-final berth against Vaal University for Technology.

Depression and mental illness are sensitive topics in football that have not been given the needed spotlight. Banga feels the Varsity Football campaign is vital for players and students.

“It’s an important campaign as it really makes us aware of how important it is to speak up, especially when you’re going through something. Speaking up will allow you as an individual to get help at a very early stage and make you realise that you’re not alone and that there’s always someone ready to help you or listen to your story,” Banga stressed.

The Varsity Football Man of the Match winner is looking to use his social media influence to spread the word that help is available and there is always someone willing to listen. Banga will share his experiences using the #SpeakUp so that more people can catch on to the trend. The shot-stopper believes universities should take a stand on social issues.

“So for Universities, it’s very important for them to take a stand as most of the students’ or individuals’ life is spent in it and this way they can grab the attention quicker and faster than they expected,” explained the UJ goalkeeper.

Banga urged Varsity Football players and fans to take advantage of the #SpeakUp hashtag and campaign if they are going through challenges.

“The only message I can send to the fans and everyone that might need help is they should speak up and understand that #SpeakUp is there for them and also speaking up will allow them to realise they are never alone in any situation. The key word is speak, not just to anyone but speak to someone who you think is going to help you overcome a situation and if you feel like you don’t have anyone, the #SpeakUp campaign is there for you.”
