Karela Hit With Registration Ban

Ghana Premier League side Karela United have been handed a FIFA registration ban after failing to settle a financial obligation owed to former player Sana Camara.

The sanction is a major blow to Karela’s squad-building plans, as the club is now prohibited from registering new players both domestically and internationally until the outstanding amount is paid.

FIFA confirmed the decision in a letter dated 17 August and issued through its Legal Portal. The ruling was signed by FIFA Disciplinary Committee Head of Legal Affairs Américo Espallargas.

Camara dispute leads to sanction

The case relates to an earlier FIFA ruling ordering Karela United to meet its financial obligations to Camara.

According to FIFA, the club has yet to comply with that decision.

“As it appears that, despite the decision, Karela United … has not yet complied with its financial obligations towards Sana Camara.”

The exact amount owed to the player was not disclosed in FIFA’s latest communication.

Karela have been given a straightforward route to having the sanction lifted: settle the outstanding debt in full in line with the original ruling.

The ban will remain in force until the obligation is fulfilled, although FIFA has capped the restriction at a maximum of three complete and consecutive registration periods.

GFA ordered to enforce ban

FIFA has also instructed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to ensure the registration restriction is enforced within Ghana if it has not already been implemented.

The development comes at a difficult time for Karela as they prepare for the new Ghana Premier League season and look to strengthen their squad.

Without the ability to register new signings, the Tamale-based club will have limited options in the transfer market until the financial dispute is resolved.

Karela United, owned by Ghana’s Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, will now be under pressure to settle the matter with Camara if they are to resume normal recruitment activity.

For now, the FIFA sanction leaves the club facing an immediate challenge both on and off the pitch.
