Mali coach sacked after Ghana defeat in World Cup qualifiers
Mali FA, FEMAFOOT have sacked the national team coach. Eric Sekou Chelle was shown the door after results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers did not impress the powers that be in Mali.
A draw against Madagascar, who played with 10 men from the 16th minute, and a loss to rivals Ghana were enough for FEMAFOOT to make a decision. Mali currently occupy 4th place in Group I, four points off the lead.
Chelle lead Mali to the quarterfinals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. A video clip of him getting water poured on his head went viral on social media after the defeat to eventual winners Ivory Coast.
