Zambia and Mali Look to Get Early Momentum in Casablanca Clash

Group-stage momentum will be on the line when Mali and Zambia open their TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 campaigns on Monday, December 22, at Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca.

Both nations arrive with pedigree, ambition and unfinished business, making this one of the more compelling early fixtures of the tournament. A positive start here could shape the path forward in a group where margins are expected to be fine.

Mali chasing substance, not promises

Mali enter the tournament with a familiar label: talented, competitive, and still searching for a first continental crown. Runners-up in 1972 and regular semi-finalists since, the Eagles know how to go deep — but now want to go all the way.

Under Tom Saintfiet, Mali have developed into a tactically mature side built around midfield control, collective structure and disciplined game management. With a squad blending experience and hunger, they will aim to stamp authority early and avoid the slow starts that have haunted previous campaigns.

“Our focus is simple: the three points,” Saintfiet said ahead of the match.
“Zambia are one of the best teams in Africa. We respect them, but we believe in what we are building.”

Midfielder Aliou Dieng echoed that message, insisting Mali will let their football do the talking.

“This will not be an easy match,” he said. “We won’t speak too much — we’ll show everything on the pitch.”

Zambia embracing the underdog edge

Zambia arrive in Casablanca with quieter expectations but no shortage of belief. Continental champions in 2012, the Chipolopolo know how to navigate tournament pressure — and how to strike when least expected.

Coached by Musa Sichone, Zambia are expected to lean on pace, physicality and rapid transitions, looking to exploit space rather than dominate possession. With less external pressure, they could find freedom in their approach.

“We are targeting a good start,” Sichone said.
“All players are fit and ready. Step by step, we want results — not just participation.”

Captain Fashion Sakala underlined the squad’s mental readiness.

“We have prepared well tactically and psychologically. Experience matters at AFCON, and we want to go far.”

A fixture with history — and teeth

This will be only the second AFCON meeting between Mali and Zambia. Their sole previous encounter came in the 1994 semi-finals, when Zambia ran out 4–0 winners on their way to the final.

That result adds an extra layer to Monday’s clash, even if three decades have passed.

Fine margins, big implications

Casablanca’s iconic stadium will host a contest likely decided by discipline, efficiency and moments rather than dominance. Mali will seek control and patience; Zambia will look for speed and disruption.

One thing is certain: for both sides, this is not just an opener — it is an early statement opportunity.

At AFCON, first impressions matter. And in Casablanca, Mali and Zambia will both be chasing one.
