Nigeria advanced to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup quarter-finals with a 2–1 victory over Mexico in Rabat on Thursday, 29 October.
Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan scored for the Flamingos, who survived a late Mexican response to secure a last-eight meeting with Venezuela on Sunday, 1 November.
Umejiaku broke the deadlock in the 40th minute, giving Nigeria an advantage to take into halftime. Dunstan doubled the lead in the 71st minute with her first goal of the tournament.
Mexico pulled a goal back deep into stoppage time, but Nigeria protected their remaining advantage to progress.
Goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho also played a significant part in the victory. FIFA’s reporting highlighted an early save to deny Mexico captain Citlalli Reyes and another intervention that diverted Kemberly Garcia’s long-range effort onto the crossbar.
Those moments helped Nigeria maintain control of the scoreline before their attacking players delivered at the other end.
The result continues an impressive tournament for the Flamingos, whose group-stage campaign included a 3–1 victory over defending champions DPR Korea.
Umejiaku was named Player of the Match against Mexico, adding individual recognition to a performance that kept Nigeria’s title challenge alive.
Venezuela now stand between the Flamingos and a semi-final place after eliminating Germany in their own round-of-16 encounter.
Nigeria have earned another opportunity to extend their campaign. The immediate task is to recover from Thursday’s contest and prepare for another knockout test.
