Patrice Motsepe, the president of the Confederation of African Football, CAF, has fulfilled another one of his promises. Dr. Motsepe has authorised a $50 000.00 boost for all the clubs participating in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup preliminary rounds.
This is the first time clubs who do not reach the group stages are getting a financial boost from CAF.
“In line with the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) President Dr. Patrice Motsepe’s promise to improve club Competitions and provide more financial assistance to Clubs, the Clubs participating in the Preliminary Stages of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup will receive USD 50 000 each,” a statement released by CAF said.
With this move, CAF will hope to see a further reduction of smaller clubs pulling out of competitions due to financial constraints. The preliminary draws are already aligned so that clubs from the same regions are drawn together.
This year’s competitions kick off this Friday with the first legs. Unseeded clubs go through two tough rounds to make it to the lucrative group stages.
