Kaizer Chiefs Look Overturn Deficit Without Missing Trio

Kaizer Chiefs’ CAF Confederation Cup ambitions will be put to the test this Saturday when they host Kabuscorp SCP at FNB Stadium in the return leg of their preliminary round tie.

Amakhosi trail 1-0 from the first leg in Luanda, meaning nothing short of a strong attacking display will do if they are to overturn the deficit and advance. But they will have to do so without three important players, adding further pressure on a squad already trying to steady itself after a dip in form.

Selection Blow for Chiefs

Assistant coach Cedric Kaze confirmed on Friday that Khanyisa Mayo, Siphesihle Ndlovu, and Paseka Mako are all unavailable for the clash.

  • Mayo, who recently netted his first goal for Chiefs, is ineligible as he was signed after CAF’s squad registration deadline.
  • Ndlovu and Mako both picked up injuries in the midweek 1-1 Premiership draw with Marumo Gallants.

The absence of the trio leaves gaps across the pitch — up front, in midfield, and at left-back — forcing Chiefs’ technical team to shuffle their options.

Who Steps Up?

In Mayo’s absence, Glody Lilepo is expected to lead the line, while Thabo Cele could step into midfield for Ndlovu. At left-back, Bradley Cross and Nkanyiso Shinga are both in contention to replace Mako.

Kaze stressed that while the unavailability of key players is a setback, it is also a chance for others to rise to the occasion.

“Football is about the squad, not just individuals. We need every player ready to contribute, and this is an opportunity for some of our boys to show their character,” said Kaze.

Chiefs Under Pressure

The clash comes at a delicate moment for the Soweto giants. After an unbeaten start to the season that included four wins and a draw against Mamelodi Sundowns, Chiefs’ momentum has slowed. Nabi’s suspension disrupted their rhythm, and the team has now gone three games without victory, including the first-leg loss in Angola.

Still, with the return leg on home soil and a passionate Soweto crowd behind them, Amakhosi know the tie remains firmly in their hands — provided they can rediscover their clinical edge in front of goal.

What’s at Stake

Progression in the Confederation Cup is more than just about continental pride for Chiefs. It’s also about proving that the squad has the depth, resilience, and tactical maturity to handle setbacks. Overturning the deficit could provide a much-needed boost of confidence, both for the players and the fans.
