Round 6 Thrills in Varsity Cup
Round 6 of the Varsity Cup delivered drama across the board, with semi-final spots tightening and momentum shifting at the perfect time.
The standout story? UJ Rugby continue their incredible rise, while UP-Tuks Rugby climbed to the top of the standings after a gutsy comeback win.
UJ Close In On Semi-Finals
UJ’s fairytale season rolled on with a hard-earned 29-13 win over CUT Ixias in Bloemfontein.
In tough, wet conditions, the game remained tight for most of the contest before UJ pulled away late with a flurry of tries. The bonus-point victory puts the Orange Army firmly on the brink of a semi-final place—an impressive turnaround after flirting with relegation last season.
CUT, meanwhile, showed fight but costly set-piece struggles, especially at the lineout, proved decisive as relegation fears continue to grow.
Tuks Fight Back To Go Top
UP-Tuks Rugby produced one of the comebacks of the round, overturning a 14-point deficit to beat Emeris Rugby 27-24.
Emeris stunned the hosts early with fearless attacking rugby, but Tuks leaned on their powerful maul and composure in the second half. A late captain’s try sealed the win and sent Tuks to the top of the log heading into the final round.
Shimlas Keep The Dream Alive
UFS Shimlas kept their semi-final hopes alive in a thrilling 40-33 victory over defending champions UCT Ikey Tigers.
The match exploded in the second half with momentum swings and point-of-origin magic from both sides. Just when it looked like UCT had taken control, Shimlas dug deep, scoring late to seal a crucial bonus-point win and stay in the hunt.
Maties Edge Eagles In Thriller
In Stellenbosch, Maties Rugby held their nerve to beat log leaders NWU Eagles 30-26 in a top-of-the-table clash.
The Maroon Machine built a strong first-half lead, but the Eagles stormed back in a chaotic second half. A late try from Maties proved the difference as they secured a vital win in the race for the semi-finals.
The Bigger Picture
With one round left, the race to the semi-finals is wide open. UJ are nearly there, Tuks have taken control at the top, and Shimlas have given themselves a fighting chance.
Expect fireworks in the final round—this Varsity Cup season is far from over.
