Samson Adamu has been confirmed as the substantive general secretary of the Confederation of African Football, becoming the first Nigerian to hold the position.

The confirmation on Thursday, 29 October, follows his appointment in an acting capacity earlier this year after Veron Mosengo-Omba’s resignation.

Adamu brings experience from within CAF, having previously served as director of competitions and subsequently director of tournaments and events.

The Nigeria Football Federation welcomed his confirmation, with acting general secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme praising his knowledge of football administration and pledging the federation’s support.

TheCable reports that CAF’s executive committee approved the appointment.

The general secretary oversees the organisation’s day-to-day administration and helps implement executive committee decisions, placing Adamu at the centre of the operational work behind African football’s competitions.

His confirmation gives permanence to an appointment that had remained interim since March.

For Nigerian football administration, it also marks a significant step in representation at the continental governing body.
