The journey to AFCON 2025 begins with preliminary draw set for Cairo
The journey to AFCON 2025 in Morocco begins with eight nations going into the pot for the preliminary round draw set for Cairo, Egypt on Tuesday 20 February. After a successful 2023 edition, all of Africa will be looking forward to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Somalia, Djibouti, Sao Tome, Chad, Mauritius, South Sudan, Liberia, and Eswatini go into the hat as the lowest-ranked nations. These eight nations will play in home and away matches to determine the four countries that will play in the group stages.
“Following the conclusion of the 34th edition of TotalEnergies CAF AFCON, the focus has shifted to the next edition, with the preliminary draw of TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 scheduled for Tuesday, 20 February 2024 in Cairo, Egypt,” read a media release from the Confederation of African Football, CAF.
While other African countries will be engaged in friendly matches and tournaments, the aforementioned eight will be starting the important journey to AFCON 2025 during the next FIFA window. The next FIFA window is from 18 to 26 March.
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is likely to run from July 23 to August 21, after the FIFA Club World Cup scheduled for June 15 to July 13, 2025.
