ZIFA Councillors Hold Hope For Zimbabwe
There is a glimmer of hope that the Zimbabwe national teams might return to international football sooner than later. FIFA suspended Zimbabwe’s membership, citing government interference after the Sports and Recreation Commission disbanded a Felton Kamambo led ZIFA administration.
The Sports and Recreation Commision, which has resisted FIFA’s call to re-instate the ZIFA board, has given Felton Kamambo and his board up to the 3rd of April to hold an Emergency Board Meeting. According to the statutes, if the ZIFA board fails to hold this meeting, ZIFA councillors can hold the meeting.
It is well known that Felton Kamambo is not allowed to participate in any ZIFA activities by the legal courts, so the SRC deadline will certainly pass without the board meeting being held. The hope for a speedy resolution lies in the ZIFA councillors invoking a 14-day notice to hold that Emergency Board Meeting without the board.
The ZIFA councillors have it within their power to chart a new way forward for Zimbabwe football and hopefully lead FIFA to lift the suspension on Zimbabwe. The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers are set to begin in May. All hope of Zimbabwe being part of the qualifying rounds now rests on that Emergency Board Meeting happening.
