NFF tries to clear Umar Sadiq injury mystery with unclear statement

The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has tried to clear the air on the mystery surrounding forward Umar Sadiq. In an unclear statement, the NFF narrates what happened in the lead up to Sadiq being sent back to Spain.

“However, the following day, he woke up to see the knee swelling, and the medical team had to apply ice which is the normal thing. The same day, we had to travel to Lagos and on the 10th January, flew to Abidjan. Then, the swelling became worse,” part of the NFF statement reads.

What is clear is that Sadiq picked a knee injury during a friendly game in Dubai. It is also clear that the striker played 90 mins in that game, despite the medical team advising that he be substituted. It is very clear that the knee was swollen the next day.

What is not clear from the NFF release is whether proper medical tests were done on Sadiq’s knee before the player was released. Clearly, Sadiq was fit enough to train and be included in the Real Sociedad squad for a midweek match.

Videos showing Sadiq training with his club in Spain have drawn anger amongst Nigerian fans who are still unhappy about the draw against Equatorial Guinea. Some have called for the medical team to be sacked.
