Burkina Faso break AFCON duck and keep streak going with late winner
Bertrand Traore’s late winner for Burkina Faso against a resilient Mauritania broke a AFCON duck and kept one streak going for the Stallions.
Before today’s one nil win, Burkina Faso had not won an opening match at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations. With the team continuously losing possession, it looked like that stat was going to stand. It also look like the streak of scoring in consecutive AFCON games was coming to end. Until talisman Bertrand Traore stepped up.
Traore replaced Ki Aziz who had been wasteful in possession and wayward in his shooting. The Burkinabe cheers when he came on did not go to waste as he calmly slotted home an injury-time penalty. It needed VAR intervention for Traore to get a chance to enhance his hero status in Burkina Faso.
The Stallions of Burkina Faso have now scored in 15 consecutive AFCON games, a record for the tournament.
Burkina Faso are now the early pacesetters in Group D after favourites Algeria could only manage a draw against Angola.
