AFCON Pride Burns Bright for Mali Midfielder Amadou Haidara

For Amadou Haidara, wearing Mali’s colours at the Africa Cup of Nations remains a moment of deep pride — no matter how many times he experiences it.

The RB Leipzig midfielder is set to feature at AFCON for the third time, yet the honour still carries the same emotional weight as it did when he first dreamed of representing his country as a child.

“It’s a great feeling and a huge honour to represent Mali at the Africa Cup of Nations,” Haidara said.
“It’s something I’ve dreamed about since I was very young.”

Despite limited club minutes in the early part of the season, the 27-year-old remains a trusted figure within Mali’s setup. He believes the Eagles head into the tournament with genuine belief and ambition.

“We have a lot of quality in this squad, and we’re going to the tournament with confidence,” he added.
“The goal is to go as far as possible.”

More Than Just a Tournament

Haidara also spoke passionately about what AFCON represents beyond the pitch, describing it as a competition that unites the continent.

“The atmosphere, the fans, the passion — AFCON is unique,” he said.
“It connects Africa. It’s incredibly important for us as players and for everyone back home. It’s also a proud moment for my family.”

Mali’s Group Challenge

Mali have been drawn into a demanding group and will face hosts Morocco, Zambia, and Comoros in the group stage:

  • 22 December: Mali vs Zambia
  • 26 December: Morocco vs Mali
  • 29 December: Comoros vs Mali

Words for a Teammate

Haidara also took time to congratulate his RB Leipzig teammate Yan Diomande, who has earned his first-ever AFCON call-up with Ivory Coast.

“I’m very happy for Yan,” Haidara said.
“He’s a great player who always gives everything. He fully deserves this opportunity.”

As Mali prepare for AFCON 2025, Haidara’s words reflect both belief and responsibility — the mindset of a player determined to help his nation leave a mark on Africa’s biggest football stage.
