Mosimane Open to PSL Return — But Only for the Right Project

Veteran coach Pitso Mosimane has reiterated that a return to South African football remains a real possibility, provided the opportunity offers a clear vision and a meaningful long-term project.

Mosimane has been without a club since ending his stint with Iraqi side Esteghlal last season. In recent weeks, speculation has linked the former Bafana Bafana mentor with a potential move to Kaizer Chiefs, though no official approach has been confirmed.

Speaking on Radio 2000, Mosimane made it clear that he is not opposed to coaching in the Premier Soccer League, but insists any move must be built on substance rather than sentiment.

“I can never say I won’t coach at home. Why not? I will coach any team that can clearly explain why I should be there,” Mosimane said.

“What is the plan? What are we fixing? Where are we coming from, and where do we want to go? Improvement doesn’t happen overnight — it takes time.”

The 61-year-old pointed to his own career as proof that success comes through patience and structure, referencing his long-term spells at Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United, where sustained planning delivered results.

“You can talk about a three-year plan, but it only works if there is a real programme behind it,” he added. “You must accept that there will be draws and losses along the way.”

A Decorated Career

Mosimane’s pedigree on the continent and beyond is well established. In South Africa, he won five PSL titles, along with multiple domestic cup trophies. His success continued abroad, highlighted by three CAF Champions League titles, league and cup honours in Egypt with Al Ahly, and promotion success in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ahli, whom he guided to the Saudi First Division title in the 2022/23 season.

Despite frequent links to vacant coaching positions, Mosimane says he does not actively apply for jobs.

“At this stage of my career, I don’t apply for jobs — and that’s not ego,” he explained.
“It’s about the project. Show me the plan. There are conversations happening almost every second week, in Africa and even in the Gulf, but it must be right and it must challenge me.”

As speculation continues, one thing remains clear: Pitso Mosimane’s next move will only come if the vision matches his ambition.
