Next Generation of Fashion Take Centre Stage in Durban July Build-Up

South Africa’s next generation of fashion talent took centre stage this week as the Hollywoodbets Durban July Young Designer Award moved into its highly anticipated semi-final phase.

With excitement building ahead of Saturday’s second round of judging, 25 aspiring designers emerged from a field of more than 140 entrants, each tasked with interpreting the 2026 Hollywoodbets Durban July theme, “Country Allure.”

Representing 10 fashion colleges and private academies from across the country, the young creatives showcased a diverse range of race-day designs that blended elegance, innovation and South African identity. Their creations offered fresh perspectives on a theme inspired by rustic sophistication, natural beauty, cultural heritage and contemporary glamour.

The opening round of judging revealed everything from refined racewear and high-fashion couture pieces to bold, avant-garde designs. Many entrants incorporated distinctly South African influences, including beadwork, shells, fringing and handcrafted fabric techniques, demonstrating how local creativity can transform a global concept into something uniquely homegrown.

Hollywood Foundation Marketing Manager and Young Designer Award judge Vuyisile Ngobese praised the standard of this year’s competition.

“When the theme was first announced, many people felt it would be difficult to interpret. However, it was exciting to see how students unpacked the concept through a South African lens and explored the different elements that make our country so alluring,” said Ngobese.

He added that many designers went beyond conventional approaches by creating custom prints, manipulating fabrics and presenting original interpretations that reflected both creativity and technical skill.

Renowned South African fashion designer and fellow judge Kathrin Kidger was equally impressed by the quality of the submissions.

“The standard has improved tremendously this year. What stood out was how deeply the students engaged with the theme rather than relying on obvious visual references. The craftsmanship and creativity on display were incredibly inspiring,” she said.

The competition now moves to its next stage at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse, where the 25 semi-finalists will present their garments before the judging panel on Saturday. The field will then be narrowed to the final 10 designers who will advance to the prestigious final round.

Racegoers attending the Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge will also have the opportunity to view the striking creations on stage throughout the day before the finalists are officially announced following the feature race.

Beyond the prestige of being crowned the Young Designer Award winner, there is plenty at stake. The overall winner will receive a R70,000 bursary from the Hollywood Foundation, cash prizes from Race Coast and Schweppes, and an exclusive trip to SA Fashion Week in Johannesburg.

The second- and third-placed finalists will also receive bursaries valued at R50,000 and R30,000 respectively, along with additional cash prizes.

With the 130th edition of the Hollywoodbets Durban July boasting a record-breaking R10 million stake, South Africa’s brightest emerging designers are proving that the fashion competition remains one of the event’s most exciting attractions, offering a platform for the country’s future fashion stars to shine.
