Durban July Final Field Confirmed As R10 Million Spectacle Takes Shape

The countdown to the 130th running of the Hollywoodbets Durban July intensified on Tuesday as the final field for South Africa’s richest horse race was officially unveiled at Hollywoodbets Greyville.

With a record-breaking purse of R10 million on offer, anticipation is building for what promises to be one of the most competitive editions of Africa’s premier horse racing event.

One of the biggest talking points of the final field announcement was the inclusion of Justin Snaith-trained runner Regulation. The talented colt kept connections and punters on edge until the final moments of the draw ceremony before securing his place among the 18 runners set to line up on July 4.

Regulation’s selection came at the expense of Choisaanada, who narrowly missed out despite being positioned higher on the final rankings. The decision is likely to spark debate among racing enthusiasts, although Regulation’s recent form and impressive victories suggest he deserves his place in the field.

Adding further intrigue, Australian-based jockey Zac Lloyd has been booked to ride Regulation. The young rider will be aiming to achieve what his legendary father Jeff Lloyd never managed during a distinguished career — winning the Hollywoodbets Durban July.

Star Major Headlines The Field

While Regulation’s inclusion generated discussion, the spotlight remains firmly on race favourite Star Major.

Trained by James Crawford, the talented three-year-old arrives at Greyville with growing momentum after capturing the prestigious Daily News 2000 and has been rewarded with an excellent draw in gate four.

The horse is part of one of the race’s most compelling stories, with French jockey Mickaëlle Michel set to take the ride. Just months after arriving in South Africa, Michel now finds herself aboard the favourite in the country’s most prestigious race.

A victory would not only provide Crawford with his first Durban July triumph as a fully licensed trainer but would also fulfil a lifelong dream for Durban-born part-owner Ravi Naidoo.

Snaith Launches Powerful Assault

Champion trainer Justin Snaith will once again be strongly represented as he chases a sixth Durban July crown.

His team includes topweight Legal Counsel, Native Ruler, Regulation, Wish List and another contender, giving the Cape Town-based conditioner significant firepower heading into the race.

Legal Counsel enters the contest after producing high-quality Grade 1 performances and could prove a major threat from a favourable draw.

Wish List is another fascinating contender. The mare has drawn gate seven and will be partnered by veteran jockey Andrew Fortune, who could become the oldest rider ever to win the Durban July at 59 years old.

Female Power On Display

This year’s race will also mark a significant milestone for female representation.

After recent editions featured few or no fillies and mares, the 2026 field boasts five female runners, highlighting the growing depth of talent among South Africa’s female thoroughbreds.

Among them, Wish List and Mocha Blend are regarded as the strongest contenders and could challenge the male runners for top honours.

Meanwhile, trainers Tammy and Candice Dawson will be hoping to make history with Minogue as they bid to become only the third female trainers to win the Durban July.

Local Hopes Fly The KZN Flag

KwaZulu-Natal racing fans will have plenty of local runners to support.

The province will be represented by Gladatorian, Mocha Blend, King Pelles, I Salute You and Isivivane, all hoping to keep the famous trophy in local hands.

King Pelles, trained by Gareth van Zyl, carries the hopes of Durban businessman Ravi Padayachee, while Peter Muscutt saddles a strong duo in I Salute You and Isivivane.

International Flavour Added To Historic Race

The 2026 edition will feature an international flavour, with several overseas-based jockeys flying in specifically for the event.

Australian riders Zac Lloyd and Chad Schofield join Mark Du Plessis among the visiting jockeys set to compete in the country’s biggest race.

However, experience could prove decisive. Only five jockeys in the field have previously won the Durban July, including three-time champion Richard Fourie and defending winner Craig Zackey.

All Set For A Blockbuster July

With a balanced handicap structure, a star-studded field, international riders, compelling storylines and a record R10 million stake, all the ingredients are in place for a memorable Hollywoodbets Durban July.

From the emergence of Star Major to the late inclusion of Regulation and the growing presence of female contenders, the 2026 renewal promises to deliver drama both on and off the track when South Africa’s sporting and social spotlight turns to Hollywoodbets Greyville on July 4.
