Gabon win again, Nigeria and Zimbabwe draw again as World Cup qualifiers continue

Gabon made it two wins out of two as Nigeria and Zimbabwe added another draw to their tallies in the start of Matchday 2 for the CAF 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Jim Allevinah and Denis Bouanga had made things comfortable for Gabon before Christophe Nduwarugari found the consolation goal for Burundi with less than five minutes to the final whistle. It was Gabon’s second win in Group F putting them on top of the standings ahead of Ivory Coast who have a game in hand.

Calls for the sacking of head coach Jose Peseiro increased in volume after Nigeria huffed and puffed to second successive draw in Group C. Just like in the game against Lesotho, the Super Eagles fell behind to brilliant free kick from Zimbabwe’s Walter Musona. Nigeria created very few chances until Kelechi Iheanacho found the net in the 67th minute. Both countries now stand on two points after Zimbabwe’s draw against Rwanda on Matchday 1.

Algeria made it two wins out two in Group G with second half strikes from Fares Chaibi and Ramiz Zerrouki. Mozambique fell to third place in the standings having played one more game than second-placed Guinea.

Tryrese Fornah and Abdul Kabia received red cards as Mahmoud Trezeguet found the net twice in an eventful Group A match played in Monrovia. Trezeguet’s brace was sandwiched by the two evictions as Egypt took their tally to six points and Sierra Leone remain on one point.
